Pet Weight Management

Pet weight management involves monitoring and controlling your pet's weight to ensure they stay healthy and active.

It's essential to consider speaking to a vet if your pet has gained or lost significant weight, appears lethargic, has difficulty moving, or if you notice changes in their eating habits.

Our veterinary practice offers weight management consultations to help keep your pet at a healthy weight, providing customised feeding and exercise plans tailored to your pet's needs.

Sadly, overweight pets have on average a 30% reduction in longevity.

Weight consultation appointments

During a weight consultation appointment, our vets will:

  • Conduct a thorough physical examination.

  • Evaluate your pet's diet and lifestyle.

  • Perform a body conditioning check to assess their weight status.

  • Develop a personalised feeding and exercise plan.

What symptoms are associated with overweight pets?

  • Difficulty walking or climbing stairs.

  • Shortness of breath or rapid panting.

  • Reduced willingness to play or exercise.

  • Visible fat deposits, particularly around the neck and base of the tail.

Overweight pets are at higher risk for various health issues, including diabetes, heart disease, and joint problems.

Common causes of weight gain

  • Overfeeding with too many treats or large portion sizes.

  • Medical conditions such as an under-active thyroid gland.

  • Genetic predispositions.

  • Allowing a sedentary lifestyle or lack of physical activity.

How do I know if my pet is overweight?

You can determine if your pet is overweight by checking for difficulty in feeling their ribs and observing their waistline for a noticeable tuck.

They may also show a reluctance to move or exercise.

Body conditioning check

A body conditioning check is an essential part of our weight management consultations.

During this check, our vets will:

  • Assess your pet's body shape and fat coverage.

  • Ensure you can easily feel their ribs without excess fat.

  • Check for a noticeable waist behind the ribs and an abdominal tuck.
