CT Scans for Dogs and Cats

CT scans for dogs and cats are advanced imaging techniques that provide detailed 3D views of internal organs, bones, and tissues. Due to their 3D nature, CT scans typically provide us with more information that regular x-rays.

The procedure generally requires a brief anaesthesia to keep pets still and perform breath holds, thereby ensuring clear and accurate images are obtained.

What is a CT scan used for?

A CT scan for pets is used to diagnose a wide range of conditions and issues.
Some common conditions that can be diagnosed using CT includes: elbow dysplasia, tumours, inner ear infections, complex fractures, spinal disorders (IVDD), dental disease and sinus/nasal disorders.

It provides detailed images that help our veterinarians assess the extent and location of a problem which is essential for planning effective treatment.

What to expect when your pet needs a CT scan?

Consultation

All pets require a consultation with one of our veterinarians prior to the CT scan being performed. This enables a comprehensive review of your pet’s situation. CT scans should be tailored to each individual case. In some cases, we may recommend that your pet is best cared for by a specialist veterinarian - such as a neurosurgeon or orthopaedic surgeon.

1

Preparation

As a short general anaesthetic is typically required, most pets need to be fasted for 8 hours prior to their scan. However, they are able to have access to water during this time.

Our veterinary team may also suggest some additional preliminary testing prior to the CT scan - such as a blood test.

2

Scan

Your pet will be positioned in the CT gantry, and the machine will then take multiple cross-sectional images of your pet. In most cases your pet will also receive a small amount of intravenous contrast. This helps highlight the blood vessels.

How do I request a CT scan?

Book an appointment with a veterinarian at Tooronga Veterinary Hospital to allow our experienced team to review your pet’s situation.
Each CT scan should be individually tailored to your pets needs.

When do I get the results of a CT scan?

Pet parents will usually receive the CT results within a few days, though timelines may vary depending on how critical your pet’s condition is.

In some cases, a preliminary assessment may be provided immediately after the procedure by a specialist surgeon.

A more detailed analysis usually takes 2-4 days, as the CT images are carefully reviewed by a specialist veterinary radiologist who then prepares a comprehensive report.
Urgent reports can be obtained within 12 hours for time sensitive conditions.

Once the radiologist completes the report, our vets will review the findings and discuss them with you. This may involve a follow-up appointment or a phone call, during which your veterinarian will explain the results and discuss any necessary treatment or further diagnostic steps.

How much does a CT scan cost?

The cost of a CT scan for dogs and cats varies depending on the type of scan performed.

CT scans typically range from $2,000 - $4,000 depending on the complexity of the situation. This includes a day stay in hospital, general anaesthesia and a specialist radiologist report.
